Abstract
This review discusses a recent research progress made on ONOO£þ. ONOO£þproduced from a reaction of O©ü£þ with iNOS (Inducible NO Synthase)-generated NO is a potent cytotoxicant that is capable of modification of various cellular constituents including oxidation of thiol groups, nitration of tyrosine, lipid peroxidation reaction and age-related signal transduction. Its deleterious actions are implicated in various age-related diseases such as Alzheimer¡¯s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer and atherosclerosis. The major protective problem against ONOO£þ is, in contrast to oxygen-derived reactive species, a lack of endogenous defense enzyme specific for its detoxification. In this review, discussion on the nature of endogenous as well as erogenous sources of defenses against ONOO£þ was highlighted.
